Pilar Cysts / Epidermoid Cysts

Pillar/Epidermoid Cysts are small bumps beneath the skin which are most commonly found on the face and neck, although can appear anywhere on the body. Epidermoid Cysts grow slowly and are often painless, although you may choose to have the lesion removed if you don’t like its appearance, or if it becomes painful or infected. These cysts are fluid-filled lumps situated in the dermis, which is just under the skin’s surface. They are usually yellow or white, often with a small plug through which pus may be able to be squeezed out. Most are benign (noncancerous) and usually painless unless they become infected.

Some typical signs and symptoms of Epidermoid Cysts include:

  • A small, round bump under the skin
  • A thick, yellow material that occasionally drains from the cyst
  • A tiny blackhead plugging the central opening of the cyst
  • Inflammation and tenderness in the area if infected

It can sometimes be difficult to distinguish between warts and skin tags, lipomas and cysts and the different types of moles. Book your appointment at Dr Skin Surgery for a specialist review.
